The attendance for the 2009 tournament was 33,610 -- the second-best ever. The largest total was 33,699 in 2005, the first year the tournament was held at Principal Park.

The number-one rated Mason City Newman Catholic Knights beat the East Greene Hawks 12-1 in the opening game of the 2009 Iowa high school state baseball tournament at Principal Park on Friday night. Newman has beat every opponent this postseason by the 10-run rule. The Knights advance to the Class 1A semifinals against fifth-ranked Alta at noon Thursday.

The Hawks took advantage of two Knights' errors and scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning. Tyler Cooklin drew a leadoff walk from Knights’ starter Hunter King. Tom Beger followed with a sacrifice bunt up the first base line and reached when King’s throw went wide at first base. The wide throw also allowed Cooklin to race all the way to third. Bradlee Clark followed with a ground ball to shortstop that went off the glove of Kyle McCann for an error as Cooklin scored. King settled in after that. He struck out the next two batters and got out of the inning when Joe Nettleton threw out Beger at the plate from right field after a base hit by Wes Onken. King allowed just one more hit through four innings of work and finished with six strikeouts.

The Knights responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally to take the lead against Cooklin, who started on the mound for the Hawks. Jordan Adams and Jon Lewerke each singled and both scored on a triple to the wall in right-center field off the bat of Tyler Nygaard.

Cooklin struggled with his command in the second inning and the Knights took advantage to add three more runs. Cooklin walked two and hit a batter to load the bases and forced in a run with a two-out walk to Adams. Lewerke followed with a base hit to left that brought in Carter Kruckenberg and Thomas Weber, extending the Knights’ lead to 5-1. After walking Kyle McCann to lead off the bottom of the third inning, Cooklin moved to the outfield and Wes Onken took over on the mound for the Hawks. Drew Verstegen greeted him with a triple to right-center that brought in McCann. Verstegen scored on a wild pitch on strike three to Nettleton. An error and a walk loaded the bases for King, who walked to force in another run. After a infield fly popout by Adams, Lewerke drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center that extended the Knights lead to 9-1.

The Knights added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to set up the opportunity to end the game early. After two singles and an error, Kruckenberg drove in a run while reaching on a fielder’s choice. After another error and a walk, Adams drove a ball to the wall in center that drove in two more. The inning ended with the catcher getting thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit to a triple.

Michael Bohl pitched the top of the fifth inning and faced the minimum as the Knights infield turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
