Mason City Newman Catholic won its third Class 1A state championship with an 11-1 victory over Lenox in five innings on Saturday afternoon at Principal Park. The Knights — top-ranked in 1A and the top seed at state — finish their season with a 37-1 record. Newman outscored its opponents 27-2 during its state tournament run at Principal Park.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Knights tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, scored five more times in the second, twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to earn the victory.

The Knights entered the bottom of the fifth with an 8-1 lead. A two-run triple by right fielder Joe Nettleton into the right field corner then stretched the lead to 10-1. Riley Hanus entered the game as a pinch runner at third base and delivered the Knights' first state title since 2002 when he scored on a fielder's choice one batter later.

Hunter King, Jonathan Lewerke, and Kyle McCann each went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Knights. Jordan Adams and Nettleton each chipped in with a pair of RBIs and leadoff man Thomas Weber scored three runs.

King (4-0) earned his second win of the state tournament, throwing all five innings. The sophomore allowed just one run on two hits. He struck out six and did not issue any walks.

Lenox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tyler Peterson reached on an infield single to start the game, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and a balk, and scored when Knights catcher Adams threw to first base to complete a strikeout of Connor Lange.

After Adams’ RBI single tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, the Knights took advantage of three errors in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Ethan Westphal (14-1) took the loss for the Tigers. The sophomore right-hander tossed nine shutout innings in Lenox’ 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Calamus-Wheatland and also earned a complete game win in the Tigers’ 11-3 semifinal triumph over perennial power Kee on Thursday. Against the Knights on Saturday, he allowed all 11 runs — only seven of which were earned — on nine hits.

Lenox — with its 10-man roster — made its fourth consecutive state tournament appearance this season. The Tigers — 2006 state champs — finished the season with a 23-4 record.
