SELECT GAME
Remsen St. Mary's  vs.  Southeast Warren
July 24, 2010

Box Score  |  Play-by-play

Remsen St. Mary’s held off a pair of rallies by Southeast Warren and won 7-5 Saturday afternoon in the completion of the first Class 1A quarterfinal at Principal Park. The game was completed after being suspended Friday night due to weather.

St. Mary’s looked to be in control of the game, up 5-1 entering the fourth inning, when Southeast Warren staged a rally.

After Warhawks’ left fielder Samuel Nutting struck out to begin the frame, Southeast Warren strung together four straight singles. Those four hits, and an errant throw from St. Mary’s second baseman Zane Schroeder on Carter Horton’s single, gave the Warhawks two runs. Third baseman Grant Seuferer followed up with a sacrifice fly to shorten St. Mary’s lead to 5-4.

St. Mary’s came through in their half of the fourth with a walk, double and triple, all with two outs, to plate an additional two runs and increase their lead to 7-4.

Southeast Warren was on the verge of another rally in the top of the seventh as Austin Allen led of the inning with a triple. Seuferer came up next with an RBI-groundout to score Allen and shorten the lead to 7-5. St. Mary’s reliever Andrew Portz struck out the next Southeast Warren batter and with two outs, was aided by a great diving catch from teammate Mike Heuertz to end the game.

Hawks’ pitcher Tanner Kockler (10-3) got the win, giving up four runs (three earned) over four innings. He walked four and struck out seven. Warhawk Seth Nutting (7-2) received the loss. Nutting surrendered seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings.

St. Mary’s moves to 25-8 on the season and will play Mason City Newman Catholic in the first 1A semifinal on Thursday at noon.

Southeast Warren ends the season at 16-11.
