Storm Lake vs. Charles City July 27, 2010 Box Score | Play-by-play Charles City put up three runs in the top of the 10th and held their lead into the bottom of the frame as the Comets cemented their place in the semifinals with a 4-3 win over Storm Lake in the second class 3A quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. The Comets tallied three runs in the 10th after just managing one run in the previous nine innings. With the score tied at 1-1, Zach Isakson hit a one-out single for Charles City to begin the 10th and moved to second after Dylan Solomon drew a walk. Nick Hageman followed with an RBI double to give Charles City a 2-1 lead. Jesse Etherington scored Solomon from third on an RBI groundout as Hageman advanced to third. Hageman then scored on a wild pitch from Luke Anderson. The Comets ended the inning with a 4-1 lead over Storm Lake. Storm Lake, in a do-or-die situation, led a furious comeback in the bottom of the 10th. After Charles City got two quick outs, Bobby Brown singled and scored on an RBI double from Nolan Cone. Cone advanced to third and subsequently scored on Luke Anderson’s single after Charles City right fielder Solomon overran the ball in the outfield. Solomon’s error allowed Anderson to move to second as the tying runner. Ethan Kenkel walked as the next batter and Ryan Matasovsky struck out swinging to end the game. Aaron Krier hit a home run for Storm Lake in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extras. Krier’s bomb was his third on the season and the first round-tripper hit at the 2010 state tournament. Both teams struggled to get runs on the board early in the game as their offenses were sporadic and produced hits that were few and far between.
