Iowa City West vs. Sioux City North July 28, 2010 Box Score | Play-by-play Iowa City West put up two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as the Trojans went on to defeat Sioux City North 11-1 in six innings in a Class 4A first-round game Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park. It was a rematch of last year's 4A championship game, won by North. West starting pitcher Ryan Rumpf had a terrific game on the mound and at the plate. He pitched a complete game over six innings and surrendered only one run on three hits. With the win, he improves to 11-0 on the season. He also had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, single, walk and sacrifice fly. He led West with a team-high three RBIs. Rumpf got things started for the Trojans in the bottom of the first inning. With two on and one out, he hit a two-run double to give his team a 2-0 lead. North came within one of West, scoring their lone run in the top of the third. Danny Rudeen doubled to lead of the third, advanced to third on a single from Blake Meacham and scored on a wild pitch. It would be all West from that point on as the Trojans put together back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth innings to boost their lead to 8-1. West continued to dominate North pitching in the bottom of the sixth. Rumpf hit a leadoff single and pinch-runner Leo Franz stole second. After David Rachke walked, Stars pitcher Dylan Ohl retired the next two before issuing another walk to Aaron Peller. That set up Tommy Heinrich’s two-run double into the gap in left-center field that ended the game at 11-1. North starter Eric McGlauflin (8-3) took the loss for the Stars. McGlauflin tossed three and one-thirds innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits. West moves to 29-9 on the season and will play Dubuque Hempstead in the first class 4A semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. at Principal Park. Note — North won the coin toss and chose to be the visiting team. In 154 coin flips — so far — at Principal Park state tournament games, three coaches have won the flip and elected to be the visiting team. Those teams are 1-2. North chose to be the visiting team and defeated Fort Dodge in the semifinals in 2009. Cedar Rapids Kennedy chose to be the visiting team in the 2006 state title game and lost to West Des Moines Valley.
