Box Score  |  Play-by-play

The Martensdale-St. Marys Blue Devils (41-0) extended their winning streak to 85 straight games with a 2-1 walk-off win over English Valleys (9-16) Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

English Valleys starting pitcher Kendall Gent issued a leadoff walk to Josh Defenbaugh in the bottom of the seventh inning. After recording a strikeout, Defenbaugh stole second and put himself into scoring position. Gent got another strikeout for the second out of the frame. David Walker worked a full-count against Gent before he lined the game-winning base hit into right field to score Defenbaugh.

Gent (4-8) completed six and two-thirds innings for English Valleys. He gave up two runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out seven.

English Valleys threatened to score the go-ahead run in the top half of the seventh when Lincoln Parmenter reached with a single. They were shut down though by two Blue Devil relievers, including Ethan Westphal (12-0) who recorded two strikeouts and went on to pick up the win.

Martensdale-St. Marys starter JD Nielsen pitched three innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Nielsen, and TJ Foster strung together 15 strikeouts through 17 batters in the game, including eight in a row by Foster.

Wes Warwick led English Valleys offensively, finishing the day 2-for-3. He came in to score the team’s first and only run of the game after his leadoff double in the first inning for a 1-0 EV lead.

EV won the pre-game coin toss and elected to be the visiting team for the game. The Bears had been the visiting team in all four of their district and substate tournament games.
