Box Score  |  Play-by-play

The Solon Spartans (37-4) used a five-run third inning to run away with an 11-0 victory over the Waukon Indians (15-25) Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park.

Solon got on the board early with a run-scoring bloop-single by Shawn Olson in the top of the first inning. Derrick Loveless singled with one out and moved to second after Tyler Smith was hit by a pitch ahead of the Olson single.

Austin Dall added an RBI-single in the second inning to score Ryan Butler who had doubled to leadoff the frame.

The Spartans exploded in the third inning with five runs. Olson reached on an error followed by a walk to Brandon Shulista. Both runners were moved over on a Butler sac bunt. Dall reached on a fielders choice to load the bases, but Waukon pitcher Logan Wood struck out Travis Brimeyer for the second out. Back-to-back walks forced in two runs then Loveless cleared the bases with a three-run triple, putting Solon ahead 7-0 at the time.

Loveless, the Iowa-bound Senior finished the game 3-for-4, reaching base in all four plate appearances. He scored twice and had three RBI.

The Spartans chased Wood (6-7) in the course of the third inning. He completed two and two-third innings, and allowed six runs on four hits. Although, only one run was earned due to the error in the top of the third. He walked three and struck out four in the loss.

Solon starter Shulista (9-0) pitched four strong innings for the Spartans. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven while picking up the win. Jordon Siddell pitched the final inning in relief for Solon and struck out one batter.

The Indians got singles from Tyler Ronan in the first inning, and Brady Hanson in the fourth, but were not able to scratch the plate in the contest.

Solon, the Class 2A Champions last year, will now move on for a 3A semifinals matchup against Marion on Friday at noon.
