Top Winning Coaches: Two of the eight coaches in the field have more than 400 career wins led by Iowa City West’s Charlie Stumpff, who has a 461-314 mark in his 22 seasons. Steve Hanson of Marshalltown has a 417-394 record in 20 seasons. Four other pilots are over 200 career wins. Matt Elsbecker of Fort Dodge is 267-247 in 13 season, with the last eight directing the Dodgers. Davenport Central’s Jay Ryan is 240-170 in 12 seasons, Tim O’Neill at Dowling, who also took Bishop Heelan, Sioux City to the 2000 and 2001 tournaments is 263-144 in 10 seasons, while Johnston’s Bret Posegate, who had Ames in the 1995 classic, is 216-177 in 10 campaigns. Stumpff, O’Neill and Posegate are among 17 coaches who have directed two different high schools to the State Tournament. (Stumpff brought Northeast Hamilton to the 1991 tournament.)
Veteran State Qualifiers: Five of the eight schools are making at least their 11th trip to the state tourney. Marshalltown is on its 11th trip and has a state tourney mark of 18-5; Davenport Central is in the summer classic for the 11th time and will be seeking to improve on a 13-9 tourney record. Johnston has an 11-8 mark and is back the 11th time also. Fort Dodge is another 11-timer and has a 6-10 tournament mark. Dowling Catholic is the elder statesman for the veterans. The Maroon are making their 13th appearance and hoping to improve on a 14-9 state ledger.
Rated and Remaining: Five rated teams in the class share honors with Class 2A for the most rated teams advancing to the final tournament of the season.
Past Champions: Six of the eight in the class are previous champions. Marshalltown has annexed five titles (1976, 1981, 1985, 1986 and 2002) to bolster three second-place finishes. Dowling Catholic has won four titles and a runner-up trophy with the crowns coming in 1988, 1989, 1999 and 2001 after a second-place finish in 1981. Cedar Rapids Washington and Johnston each have two championships. The Warriors won in 1966 and 1994 and are making their sixth trip and first since 2000. Before last summer, Johnston last previous crown was in 1977. They took second in 1979 and 1993. Davenport Central’s summer title came in 1979 and they have five second place finishes with the last being in 2007. Fort Dodge’s lone championship was in 1969. The Dodgers were second in 1989.
Back from 2008: Only three of last year’s final eight return. Top-rated Sioux City North, defending champion Johnston, and Marshalltown, last year’s runner-up, lead a well-balanced and dangerous 4A field.
Over 70 Percent Victories: The 4A tournament teams bring a combined record of 223-88 for a 71.7 winning percentage. The field averaged 36.5 regular season games with Iowa City West playing the max of 40. Sioux City North, Cedar Rapids Washington, Fort Dodge, Johnston and Marshalltown each played 38.
North Star’s Ace: Sioux City North has stayed in the top ten this summer even though pitching ace Dean McArdle has seen only limited duty (5-1) due to injuries. He returned the mound for the substate finals and threw five inning of one-hit ball. His status for the state tournament will be day-to-day.
Did You Know? Davenport Central has won one summer tourney and has finished second five times, but the Blue Devils’ title portfolio looks better when you add in 10 spring titles and three runner-up finishes.
