CLASS 4A NEWS AND NOTES

Top Win Coaches: Class 4A is loaded with successful coaches with six boasting marks of over 200 career victories. Bret Hoyer has rolled up 534-287 in 21 seasons at Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Regina, Iowa City. Charlie Stumpff has notched a 23-year record of 490-323 at Iowa City West preceded by a state tourney team at Northeast Hamilton in 1991. Tom Witry of Dubuque Hempstead has authored a 379-178 mark in 11 seasons. Dowling Catholic’s Tim O'Neill, who also coached Bishop Heelan to a title in 2001, has an 11 season record of 295-155. Troy Rood of Mason City, in nine campaigns, has recorded a 248-121 record. Ankeny's Mark Hey in seven seasons has a 213-99 slate.

Rated and Remaining: The Class 4A ratings by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association had the best showing of the four classes with six teams advancing. Surviving to play another day are top-ranked Mason City; second-rated Dubuque Hempstead; No. 3 Dowling Catholic; fourth-ranked Iowa City West; No. 6 Cedar Rapids Kennedy and the seventh-ranked Stars from Sioux City North.

In Defense: Sioux City North returns to the tournament aiming to defend the championship they won last summer. It is the seventh trip for the Stars. Also returning from 2009 are Dowling Catholic and Iowa City West, last year's runner-up.

Veteran State Qualifiers: The tournament veteran in this year’s field is Dowling Catholic, which is making its 14th appearance. They are 14-6 in state tourney games. Cedar Rapids Kennedy is making its 12th trip and is 7-11 in state tourney games. Dubuque Hempstead is seeking to improve on a 12-7 tourney slate in their 12th trip. Ankeny (9-8) and Mason City (8-8) are each appearing for the 10th time.

Past Champions: Five teams have taken home a total of 11 titles in previous years. Dubuque Hempstead and Dowling Catholic lead the way with four each. The Mustangs won in 1974, 1978, 1983, and 1984, while the Maroons caught lightning in 1988, 1989, 1999 and 2001. In addition to Sioux City North's crown last summer, Mason City (1972) and Ankeny (1992) have won crowns.

Over 75 Percent Victories: Seventy-six losses may seem a lot for a 4A field, but contrast that to 233 wins and the field of eight takes on some significance in a year that arguably say considerable parity in all four classes. The cumulative winning percentage of the tourney field is a solid .754.

Enrollments: The IHSAA uses the official state certified BEDS enrollment figures for grades 9 thru 11 for the 2009-10 school year for the placement of a school in particular class.  Ankeny is the largest school of the eight 4As with 1,559, while Indianola ranks as the smallest with 739.

Did You Know? Two teams in the field of eight had a mini-state tournament regular season schedule. Dowling Catholic had games this summer with 4A qualifiers Indianola, Ankeny, Mason City and Sioux City North, going a collective 5-4. Mason City played five State Tournament teams in three classes. The Mohawks faced 4A opponents Sioux City North, Ankeny, and Dowling Catholic, and also squared off with 1A and city rival Newman Catholic and 3A qualifier Charles City. The Mohawks were a composite 6-1 against those teams. They split a pair with Ankeny who they will face in the quarterfinals, Wednesday at 8 p.m.
