CLASS 3A NEWS AND NOTES

Winning Coaches: Three coaches in the 2010 field have produced more than 240 career wins. Charles City's Rick Gabel has a 19-year mark of 380-247 record. Algona's Rich Collison has a 27-year career mark of 396-305. Carlisle's Dave Dirkx, in his 11th season, is 249-112.

Demolished Ratings Wiped out 9: Nine of the IBCA’s Top 10 teams on the eve of the district tourneys have been eliminated by a wide-open 3A field. The experts are blinking on trying to pick a favorite meaning the title, rightfully, will be decided by the players between the lines. Only No. 8 Glenwood (27-7) survived the raid on the top 10. The Rams, making their tourney debut, also grabbed the number two seed.

State Veterans: Knoxville, Charles City and Carlisle are the tournament vets. Knoxville is making its ninth state appearance with a 6-7 mark in state competition. This is Charles City's eighth trip where they are 5-7 in state tourney games. Carlisle comes to the tourney for the seventh time and the Wildcats have authored a 6-5 state slate.

First Time Qualifiers: Glenwood and DeWitt are each making their Summer State Tourney debut. Both had impressive performances in winning their District and Substate. Algona and Independence are each making their second visit. Algona last appeared in the summer field in 1999, where they lost to eventual champion Assumption. The Bulldogs were also a semifinalist in the 1953 Spring State Meet. Independence was previously in the tourney in 1996 finishing, taking second to Harlan. The Mustangs enter with just a 14-23 record and overcame losing 10 of their last 11 games prior to the start of the tournament series.

Past Champions: Two teams in this year’s field have taken home the gold before. Knoxville was the 3A champion in 2002 and Carlisle earned the 2003 2A trophy.

One Returns from 2009: Only last year’s runner-up Storm Lake has managed to survive the cut to make this year's elite eight.

Longest Current Winning Streak: Many of the tourney teams went into the tournaments with losses or only a few straight wins. Storm Lake’s current streak of five wins is the best in the field.

Enrollments: The IHSAA uses the official state certified BEDS enrollment figures for grades 9 thru 11 for the 2009-10 school year for placement of a school in a particular class. Storm Lake is the largest school of the eight with 539, while Algona is the smallest with 348.

Did You Know? Carlisle coach Dave Dirkx is coaching his fourth state tournament team — all at Carlisle, but is in the State Championship Record Book as a player. In the 1993 1A title game playing for Storm Lake St. Mary, he tied a championship game record with four hits against Cumberland-Massena. Teammate Chad Stevens also stroked four hits in the 16-3, six-inning win. They share the mark with seven other players with Mount Vernon’s Jon Aronowitz being the most recent in 1997. DYK2: Glenwood coach Brett Elam now joins with his father Ken as the fourth father-son combo to direct a team into the summer tourney. Ken brought Lewis Central to their very first tournament in 1991.
