Four of last summer’s elite eight in Class 2A return to the state tournament, led by defending champion and top-ranked Davis County. The 41-1 Mustangs however are the number two seed, being out-pointed by second-ranked Dyersville Beckman (35-7), who return for the first time since 2009 when they were the runner-up. Also back in the fold are third-ranked North Polk (29-4); 10th-ranked Carroll Kuemper (26-11), and Alta-Aurelia (23-10). Beckman is making its 14th state appearance and is 19-10 in state competition. North Polk is in the championship show for the 11th time.
Jenk & Company: Three coaches in the field have 480 or more career wins. Tom Jenk Jr., the veteran Beckman coach brings a 36-year career record of 941-441 into the tournament. That is fifth best all-time and fourth among active coaches. He also leads the coaches in the field with 13 state appearances. Ogden’s Dick Smith has a career record of 551-317, while North Polk’s Dave Middleton’s ledger stands at 480-200
Rated and Remaining: The tournament series wiped out six of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 10 teams, with the four rated clubs above advancing. Five of the 10 made it to substate play, where North Polk sidelined No. 9 Hudson.
Winning Streaks: Forest City has won its last 11 games in succession. Davis County and Beckman each enter the tourney on 10-game winning streaks. Beckman has won 24 of its last 25 games, while Davis County has recorded 64 wins in its last 65 contests, including 54 straight (ending 2011 with 23 and winning its first 31 this summer).
Former Champions: Three members of this year’s field are past champions with Beckman posting crowns in 1968, 1986 (3A), and 2000. Davis County won its title last summer, while Forest City won the Class 3A crown in 1984.
“Young” Qualifiers: Four teams are making just their second tournament appearance — Alta-Aurelia (Alta was also a 2009 qualifier), Forest City, Ogden (a semifinalist in 1999), and West Branch, who was runner-up to Beckman in 2000, a match-up that opens this year’s tournament on Friday night. Alta-Aurelia and Davis County square off in an opening game. The two teams met in the first round last summer with Davis County winning 8-0.
Cinderfellas: Two coaches are appearing for the first time in Class 2A. They are Jeff Jerome of Forest City and B.J. Rios of West Branch
Teams Are a Collective 219-66: The eight teams have combined for 219 wins against 66 losses for a 76.8 winning percentage. Four of the teams have 26 or more triumphs with Davis County setting the pace with 41.
Hit Squads: Davis County tops the tournament teams in several offensive categories. The Mustangs have 418 hits, a team batting average of .382 and a .569 slugging percentage triggered by 32 home runs. All four lead the tournament class. They are second with 363 runs, 129 extra base hits including 86 doubles, and 320 RBIs. Beckman is close behind with a .362 team batting average with 413 hits and a .530 slugging percentage, each second best. The Blazers have tourney bests of 366 runs scored, 137 extra base hits including 98 doubles, 24 triples, and 324 RBIs.
Mound Corps: Davis County’s pitching staff also leads the tourney with a 1.24 ERA, 452 strikeouts, a tourney low of 77 bases on balls, and an opponent batting average of .136. North Polk’s staff has a 1.45 ERA and has an opponent batting average of .156. Ogden’s pitchers have recorded 345 strikeouts, allowed opponents a .153 batting average while posting a 1.98 ERA.
Enrollments: The IHSAA uses the official state certified BEDS enrollment figures for grades 9 thru 11 for the 2010-11 school year to determine the class of a school. North Polk is the largest with a 9-11 enrollment of 284 (one more than Forest City) while Ogden is the smallest with 184 students, one less than Alta-Aurelia.
