MUSTANGS OUTLAST WARRIORS 1-0 IN 2011 REMATCH

The rematch of last year’s Class 2A quarterfinals between Alta-Aurelia and Davis County featured an old-fashioned pitchers’ showdown between starters Calvin Mathews and Austin Delp. Both took shutouts into the sixth inning. Defending state champion and top-ranked Davis County won 1-0 in a 71-minute thriller Saturday night to advance to the semifinals.

The game’s lone run came in the home half of the sixth. Clint Foster hit a hard ground ball to Neil Marshall at third base, who made a hard stop. Marshall fired a one-hopper that pulled Ross Friedrich off the bag at first allowing Foster to reach first. Foster stole second, putting him in scoring position for the Mustangs. Calvin Utt knocked a grounder that got under Marshall’s glove to plate Foster just ahead of the throw from left fielder Jalen Henningsen.

Mathews, who faced Alta-Aurelia in last year’s quarterfinal 8-0 win, walked none and struck out 10 in a two-hit complete game shutout to earn the win. Delp suffered the loss despite allowing just one unearned run on two hits, walking two, hitting two batters and striking out five in six innings of work for Alta-Aurelia.

Davis County (42-1) — its only loss to Des Moines East — will face North Polk in the 2A semifinals on Thursday at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Warriors end at 23-11.
