ALGONA GARRIGAN SURVIVES NORTH TAMA'S LATE RALLY

Algona Garrigan starter Austin Vaske struck out 12 to ignite the Golden Bears 3-1 victory over the Redhawks of North Tama in the 1A quarterfinals at Principal Park on Monday.

The Golden Bears were the first to strike getting in a run with two outs in the third. Alex Boisjolie hit a sharp ground ball to Brandon Kaufman at third, who made the stop. His throw pulled first baseman Brian Seda off the bag allowing Boisjolie to reach first and Grant Reding to score.

Jake Kollasch gave the Golden Bears some insurance in the sixth, driving in Boisjolie and John Burns with a single that split the gap between short and third. Boisjolie and Burns hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.

The Redhawks sparked a rally in their final attempt. Kaufman cracked a double over left fielder Reding’s head and would come around to score on a two-out single up the middle off the bat of Huston Danker. However, Vaske struck out Brent Billerback for the game’s final out.

Vaske (11-1) gave up one run on three hits and walked one in a complete game effort from the mound. North Tama starter Wrage (6-3) allowed all three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out one while suffering the loss in the contest.
