MSTM UPSETS GARRIGAN IN EXTRAS

Two-time defending state champion Martensdale-St. Marys scored twice with two outs in the seventh inning and tallied five runs in the eighth to upset top-seeded Algona Garrigan 7-3 in the 1A semifinals at Principal Park on Thursday night.

Garrett Gehringer led off the eighth with a single and advanced to third on a double off the bat of David Walker. Trent Dooley laid a bunt single down the third base line on a suicide squeeze to bring in Gehringer for the go ahead run. J.D. Nielsen walked to load the bases for Zeb Noel, who collected his third hit of the game with a bases clearing triple splitting the gap in right-center. The Blue Devils would get another on a RBI-single from Robert Walker.

Bishop Garrigan would get one run in the home half of the eighth. Alex Boisjolie knocked a triple and came around to score on a RBI-single from Andrew McGuire.

Eddy Kraber (10-0) pitched all eight innings to earn the win. The sophomore allowed all three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight.

Austin Vaske (11-2) suffered the loss, allowing all seven runs on nine hits and striking out eight.

Noel went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Robert Walker went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the only Blue Devils to tally a multi-hit game.

Josh Burns gave Bishop Garrigan the first lead of the game with two-run single down the third base line scoring Vaske and Zach Keith. Vaske singled and Keith reached on an error earlier in the inning.

MSTM launched a two-out, three-hit rally in the seventh to even up the score. Robert Walker ripped a double in the gap between right and center that scored Gage Gavin, who was courtesy running for Noel. Josh Defenbaugh followed with base hit passed a diving Jake Kollasch at second base that scored Robert Walker.

The Golden Bears went quietly in the home half of the seventh sending the game in to extras.
