The Iowa high school state baseball tournament will be held at Principal Park through the 2020 season. Tentative dates:
2017 — July 21-29
2018 — July 20-28
2019 — July 26-August 3
2020 — July 24-August 1

The Newman Catholic Knights defeated the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks 2-0 Thursday at Principal Park in a Class 1A semifinal game to advance to the championship round.

The Martensdale-St. Marys Blue Devils defeated the Akron-Westfield Westerners 6-1 in a Class 1A semifinal game Thursday at Principal Park. The Blue Devils grabbed the lead with a run in the first, and never looked back to secure the win and advance to the finals on Saturday.

The Beckman Catholic Trail Blazers defeated the Iowa City Regina Regals 8-0 Thursday night at Principal Park in a Class 2A semifinal game to advance to the championship round. Beckman will look to win its first state championship since they took the title in 2013.

The Kuemper Catholic Knights defeated the Centerville Big Red 6-2 Thursday night at Principal Park in a Class 2A semifinal game to advance to the championship round. Kuemper will meet Beckman Catholic in the Class 2A championship game.

The top four teams in the final rankings by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association and Radio Iowa are in the Class 1A state tournament field. The teams are #1 North Linn, #2 Newman Catholic, #3 Martensdale-St. Marys and #4 Akron-Westfield. Sixth-ranked Lisbon is the only other Top 10 team to qualify. However, the seeds were jumbled a bit, with the top seed going to Newman, followed by MSTM, Akron-Westfield and North Linn. The Dowling Catholic Maroons defeated the Mason City Mohawks at Principal Park, 8-1 in a Class 4A first-round game, Thursday morning at Principal Park. The game was played Thursday morning due to extensive rain delays on Wednesday.

Defending champion Cedar Rapids Prairie is in the Class 4A state tournament field. The Hawks are one of six teams in the final rankings by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association and Radio Iowa to make the field. The top three teams in the rankings — Johnston, Dowling Catholic and Iowa City West — are also the top three seeds. Five of the top six teams in the final rankings by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association and Radio Iowa didn't make it to the Class 2A state tournament. Second-ranked Treynor did, but the Cardinals are only a fifth seed. The top seeds went to Beckman Catholic and Van Meter. Harlan and Assumption finished 1-2 in the rankings, but the seedings went the other way, with Assumption claiming the top seed. Harlan is the defending champion. The Iowa high school state baseball tournament has been held at Principal Park the past 12 years. This might have been the best. Great games. Great team efforts. Great individual performances. Read more for news and notes about the 2016 state tournament.

Fans can keep foul balls hit into the stands during state tournament games. The Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities is the official foul ball sponsor of the tournament. Their support of high school baseball makes it possible for fans to keep a great souvenir of the state tournament. There are an average of 750 baseballs used each year during the state tournament. And most of them go home with fans.

The state baseball tournament moved to Des Moines in 2005, and since then, lots of talented baseball players have showcased their skills at Principal Park. The list includes players who went on to play in college, in the minor leagues and in the major leagues. And players who went on to work for the host Iowa Cubs.
